Featuringacastoftwo,Nightwalkingopenswithawomantakingashortcutdownadarkstreet,awarethatamanisfollowingclosebehind.Avoice-overallowsustohearherthoughts,and,naturally,sheisconcernedthatthepersonbehindherisapossibleattacker.Eventually,sheturnstoconfrontherpursueronlytodiscoverthatthereisno-onethere.And,evenstranger,whenshebacktracksalittle,shefindsamobilephoneabandonedonthepavement.
Thefilmthenshowsthesameshortjourney,thistimeseenfromtheman'spointofview.Heisequallytense—worriedthatthewomaninfrontmightthinkhimtobearapist.Finally,hedecidestobroadcasthisinnocencebycallinghismumonhismobileandspeakingloudly,assumingthatwhenthewomanhearshisconversation,shewillfeellessintimidated.Unfortunately,whilstdialling,themanfallsheadfirstintoadeephole,droppinghismobileintheprocess.
WhatmakesNightwalkingsuchacleverandresonantpieceoffilm-makingisthatitnotonlytacklesanawkwardsituationwithwhichmostpeoplecansympathise,andcarriesaniftytwistending,butitalsomakesawrycommentonoursociety,wherefearandsuspicionisrife.Allthatinlessthanthreeminutes—quiteanachievement.
Myonlycomplaint(andit'ssomethingthatotherreviewersalsoseemtohaveaproblemwith)isthatyoumighthavetowatchtheendingacoupleoftimesinordertofullyunderstandwhathashappened.
