OpeningwiththepublishingofhisbookLyingLiarsetc,thisfilmfollowstheliberalspokesmanandcomedianAlFrankenashesetsupaliberalradiostation,goestotheRepublicanconventionandconsidersarunforSenate.AsidefromseeinghisbookintheshopsandwatchingsomeofhisSNLstuff,Idon'treallyknowhowhefitsintothepoliticallandscapeintheUS.Idon'tthinkI'maloneinnotcompletely"getting"howtheUSworksinthisregard.IntheUKwedohavemediathatfallsintocertainpoliticalgroups(egtheDailyMailhasalwaysbeenaTorypaper)butwedon'treallyhaveanythinglikethesplitliketheydointheUS.

SoIwasn'tsurehowIwouldcopewithafilmthatverymuchinvolveslookingatthissplitandfocusesonamanwhoisverymuchontheliberalextremeinthesamewaythatothersareontheconservativeextreme.HoweverIactuallyfounditveryeasytofollowbecausethereisn'tmuchmoretoitthanusfollowingFrankenontheroad.Othershavesaidthatitfeelslikea90minutecampaignadvertandtheyarebangonbecauseifyouarealiberalthenthefilmdoesverymuchpresentapassionatemanwhoisfightinghiscorner.ThatplusthefactthathehasannouncedhisplanstorunforSenatesuggeststhatifthefilmwasnotdoneforthisreasonthenitcertainlyhasn'thurt.

Thefilmisreasonablybalancedinsomuchasitcanbe.It(thefilm)doesn'tsetoutafteranyrepublicansbutofcourse,byfollowingFrankenandgivinghimthelion'sshareoftimethenitwasnevergoingtobeadocumentarythatlooksevenlyatbothsidesoftheargument.Ididenjoythefilmandfounditbothinterestingandfunnybutthenatureofthepoliticsinitwaswhatratherputmeoff.NowIacceptthatthisistheUSratherthanjustthisfilmbutIstillfoundtheratherpolarisingnatureofbothFrankenandhisconservativefoilsonFoxNewsetchardtoswallow.NowsatiristsandcomediansdomockandIhavenoproblemwithJohnStewart'sapproachtothis;howeverwithFrankenweseehimmeetingwiththesepeopleandengaginginpoliticaldebatewiththemanditisnotalwayspretty.Attimeshesimplylaysouttheliesandspinoftheopposition(asindeedhesayshedoesatonepoint)andhedoesitwellbutothertimesweseehimscoringeasypointsinpeople'sfacesandloweringhimselftothelevelofslangingmatcheswithconservativecommentatorsandjournalists.IknowitisthenatureofUSpoliticsforthisbutIdonotseehisapproachbeingbetterthantheirs–evenifIamclosertohispoliticalviewpointthantotheirs.Hetalksaboutunifyingbutheseemskeenertosplitandjustseewhogetsthemostvotes.Ihavenotdoneagreatjobofdescribingthis,butitisanunpleasantpartofthefilmbecauseitisdepressingtoseebothendsofthespectrumjustfightingratherthandebating.

Overallthough,anentertainingfilm.Probablynotevenworthalookifyouareaconservative,becausethefilmbelongstoFranken.Attimeshecomesacrossasclearmindedbutatothertimesheisnobetterthansomeofthosehemocks–thisisthebadsideofthefilmbutinfairnessthisaspectisinterestingevenasitisunfortunate.
